Dear CPS Families, Colleagues, and Supporters,
Classes begin for all CPS students in just over three weeks, and we want to help all of our families get ready to start the school year strong on Monday, August 22.
Back-to-School Bashes
Don’t forget to attend one of the District’s six remaining Back-to-School Bashes. These community-centered events offer helpful back-to-school information, free school supplies, and plenty of fun activities for kids. They are also an opportunity to speak with health professionals about COVID-19 and get up-to-date on your vaccines and boosters.
Below is a list of this year’s remaining Back-to-School Bashes, all of which run from 2 - 5 p.m.:
- Monday, August 1: Tarkington School of Excellence, 3330 W 71st St
- Friday, August 5: Field Elementary School, 7019 N Ashland Ave
- Tuesday, August 9: Fenger Academy High School, 11220 S Wallace St.
- Wednesday, August 10: Chicago Vocational Career Academy, 2100 E 87th St.
- Thursday, August 11: Michele Clark High School, 5101 W Harrison St.
- Friday, August 12 (rescheduled): William F. Finkl Academy, 2332 S Western Ave.
Announcing New Additions to our Board of Education
This month, CPS was delighted to welcome Michael Scott, Jr., a former alderman from the City of Chicago, and Sulema Medrano Novak, an accomplished and award-winning trial lawyer to the Chicago Board of Education. Paige Ponder, a former member of our CPS team, will also be joining the Board, in August.
Their previous service to our city shows what dedication these three professionals have to ensuring Chicago remains a world-class city with a thriving public education system. I look forward to working with them and have total confidence that their collective experience will be of tremendous benefit to our educators, our families, and most importantly, our students.
Familiar Faces in New Roles
I am thrilled to announce that eight of our District’s veteran leaders are taking on top administrative roles as we approach the coming school year. All are dedicated CPS professionals who have been promoted from within the District to take on new challenges and responsibilities. More than half are proud CPS alumni, and six of the eight have previously served as District principals, giving them a unique understanding of the needs of CPS students and their families. Our new leaders are:
- Charles Mayfield, Interim Chief Operating Officer, from Chief Procurement Officer
- Dr. Annise Lewis, Chief of Schools, Network 11, from Chief of the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL)
- Dr. Tiffany Brown, Deputy Chief of Schools, from principal of Wendell Smith Elementary School
- Dr. Ethan Netterstrom, Deputy Chief of Schools, Network 7, from Executive Director - School Support in the Office of Network Support
- Patricia Harper Reynolds, Deputy Chief of Schools, Network 9, from principal of Walsh Elementary School
- Dr. Anthony Rodriguez, Deputy Chief of Schools, Network 16, from principal of Schurz High School
- Judith Camacho-Campbell, Deputy Chief of Staff to the CEO, from Acting Deputy Chief of Staff to the CEO
- Ali N. Muhammad, Deputy Chief for the Office of Student Readiness, Office of College and Career Success, from principal of Corliss High School

Join the West Side Learning Center for its Community Day - Saturday – Aug 6
CPS students and their families are invited to attend a Community Day at West Side Learning Center (WSLC) from 10am to 3pm Saturday, August 6. It is located at 4624 W. Madison Street in Chicago. There will be music, food, giveaways and raffle prizes. This event is ideal for those who are exploring educational pathways and thinking about enrolling at City Colleges of Chicago (CCC).
In addition to offering courses for a two-year traditional associate's degree, WSLC offers basic and advanced certificates in Basic Nursing Assistance and Health Science career pathways. It also offers programming in Adult Education and Community and Continuing Education.

Más de la mitad se graduaron con orgullo de las CPS y seis de los ocho sirvieron antes como directores en el Distrito, unas experiencias que los han dotado con un conocimiento único sobre las necesidades de los estudiantes de las CPS y sus familias. Nuestros nuevos líderes son:

Únase al West Side Learning Center para su día de comunidad, el sábado 6 de agosto
Los estudiantes de las CPS y sus familias están invitados a participar de un día de comunidad en el West Side Learning Center (WSLC) de 10 a. m. a 3 p. m. el sábado, 6 de agosto. El WSLC está localizado en 4624 W. Madison Street, en Chicago. Habrá música, comida, regalos y rifas. Este evento es ideal para todos los que estén explorando caminos educativos y pensando matricularse en los City Colleges of Chicago (CCC).
Además de ofrecer cursos para obtener un grado de asociado de dos años tradicional, el WSLC ofrece certificados básicos y avanzados en asistencia de enfermería básica y ciencias de la salud. También ofrece programación en educación adulta y educación comunitaria y continua.
